Club History
The aim of our club is to provide safe family orientated competition for all ages young and old. It is ideal for younger members who have a love for cars but have no way of being involved in motor sport competitions. RC Racing allows them to race and maintain their own cars in a safe and friendly environment. Competitors acquire many different skills while racing, race craft, handling pressure, maintenance / technical skills and communication skills. The family aspect is clearly evident within the club with eight of the existing members being Father Son combinations. With the help of the Silvercan series we hope to increase the club membership and open up new race venues. We are also looking at different forms of racing apart from Circuit racing and Drifting, the M03 and TT01 have sealed differentials and gearboxes which allow them to run outdoor on gravel so offroad circuit racing, rallycross or rallying are all possible.
The club was started in 2005 by a group of enthusiasts under the name of Fermoy Model Car Club and was based in St. Colmans Hall in Fermoy. Due to the increased number of members from outside the Fermoy area it was decided at the AGM. In January 09 to form a new club under the name of Munster RC Car Club to facilitate the running of events at other venues around Munster.
Irish Remote Control Model Car Racing scene,
There are five clubs in the country, Ulster model Car Club, two clubs in Dublin, a club in Navan Fermoy Model Car Club and Munster RC Club (an offshsoot of Fermoy Model Car Club) in Co. Cork. Some of the clubs have outdoor tracks and others indoor, some race off-road buggies outdoor during the Summer and Touring Cars indoor in the winter. Fermoy Model Car club race Touring cars indoor all year round, under the name of Munster RC Club we are running events in Blarney, and Buttevant with planned events in LimerickCity, Middleton, and Mallow. The cars we race are 1/10 scale four wheel drive electric powered cars these are highly complex machines with Carbon fibre chassis and all the suspension setup adjustments of their full sized cousins. The age group in the club range from Eight years to fifty. In the recent Fermoy round of the Irish Remote Control Car Championship there was a 12 year old, a 14 year old a couple of 15 and 16 year olds and the rest were in their twenty’s, thirty’s, and forty’s, where else can you get a sport where Adults and kids can compete on equal terms? The eventual winner was Alan Biggerstaff from Belfast and with that win took the honour of Irish Champion.
The cost of these cars can still be a little high with a decent car costing upwards of €400 and couple to that spares and tyres and motor rebuilds for the year, could add another €100 or more. With this in mind we launched two new one make series, the Tamiya M-03 series, and Tamiya TT01 series, these cars are 1/10 scale front wheel drive and four wheel drive, in order to keep costs down no modifications are allowed to these cars, you must run with the standard motor and tyres that come with car from the factory, the cost of these cars new we hope will be around €140 to €160 and much cheaper if you buy second-hand off EBay, the running cost of these cars should be next to nothing as no modifications are allowed and parts don’t break easily. This class will be open to all ages but is seen as an ideal entry level class for younger racers. It might also be suitable for people with disabilities as Throttle and Steering are operated by the hands
